About Blackout Sizer
An independent reference for keeping a US home running through a power outage: how much battery or generator you need, which models fit, how often the grid fails where you live, and what a fault code means.
What we publish
A sizing calculator with its formulas in the open; specifications of 719 power stations, home batteries, generators and solar panels read from manufacturer pages; outage statistics for every state and large utility from the U.S. Energy Information Administration; and error codes summarized from official manuals with the page number.
Editorial policy
Numbers come from a named source. Every specification links to the manufacturer page it came from and shows the date we read it. Values the maker does not publish are left out, not estimated. Error codes cite the manual and page; outage figures cite EIA Form 861.
How pages are built. Software collects the source pages and a language model drafts structured records from them. Before anything is published, a deterministic check confirms that each number and code appears in the source document and lies in a plausible range; records that fail are held back. Specifications older than 90 days are re-read from the source.
No reviews we did not do. We have not tested the products, and we say so. Comparisons state differences in published numbers; "best" lists state their rule in one sentence and compute run times with the same formulas as the calculator.
Safety. Connecting a generator or battery to a home panel needs a transfer switch or interlock and a licensed electrician; we link the manufacturer's manual instead of improvising wiring advice.
How we make money
Some store links are affiliate links: if you buy, we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Commissions never change the numbers or which models fit your list. Among models that fit, those sold on Amazon are shown first, because that is where our store links work; we say so on each list. There are no ads in the calculator or product lists. Details: affiliate disclosure, privacy.
Corrections
If a number differs from the manufacturer's current page, the manufacturer page is right. Our records are re-checked on a schedule and wrong ones are withdrawn; see about the data for sources and refresh intervals. Found a wrong number? Write to [email protected] with the page address and, if you can, the manufacturer page that shows the right value.
